i think veganism is just such an integral part of living a gentle life. just living your life in a way that harms as few beings as possible and making no distinction in regards to who receives your compassion based on species, intelligence or similarity to you

So, POC don’t deserve to be taken into account or have a ‘gentle’ life? Poor people? People with dietary restrictions?

Veganism isn’t gently or soft, it’s a diet plan. Learn about it if you’re gonna shame people for not doing it.

Many many reasons here why this response is absurd… Like yikes, what a blatant attempt to erase the existence of soo many vegans in order to defend carnism and the brutal exploitation and slaughter of other sentient beings.

~ Veganism has a deep global history (particularly in India, Asia, and Africa) which this response completely ignores, also way to erase the existence of so many POC who are vegan and their vital and admirable activism/advocacy work on behalf of the most defenseless and voiceless. The notion that caring about animal rights is exclusively the domain of white people is also incredibly insulting, given the history of the movement. There are also so many prominent vegans, like Coretta Scott King, Angela Davis, Dr. Amie Breeze Harper, David Carter, Benjamin Zephiniah, etc. People of color, who, along with so many others, have had a massive and undeniable impact on the vegan movement, and pretending otherwise is blatant erasure

~ Veganism defined, is simply “a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose”. So while humans have no biological need to consume any animal flesh/milk for other species/eggs and there is zero scientific evidence whatsoever to suggest that there is any physical health issue or condition which requires the consumption of such “products”. There will, of course, be a very small number of cases where the complete boycott of supporting animal exploitation as a consumer is not possible and practicable, at least at this current time in their life, and for these people, certain animal products are reasonably necessary to maintain health even though they do their best in all other areas of animal exploitation. This is completely in line with veganism. And when it comes to dietary restrictions specifically, just like with a non-vegans diet (where you would have exactly the same issues with restrictions a result of things like intolerances and allergies to things like wheat, soy, nuts, etc.) eating as a vegan offers a massive variety of choices and doesn’t require you eating anything that you’re allergic and/or intolerance to. There are many many vegans have health conditions and disabilities (myself included) as well as many dietary restrictions, and its pretty darn insulting to try to use us as a smokescreen against veganism. Veganism = Simply means doing your own personal best, and this, our personal best, is something we can all do.

~ To try and claim that veganism is not something poor people can do not only insults our ability to be compassionate towards others but completely erases the existence of so many doing just that. It’s just using poverty as yet another smokescreen for carnism. It also again, completely misunderstands what veganism is. And lets not forget that not only is a plant-based diet is by far the least expensive one on the planet pound per pound, with some of the cheapest and most nutritious staple foods in any supermarket and worldwide being vegan staple foods such as rice, beans, soy, grains, lentils, potatoes, pasta, frozen and canned fruit, and veg, etc. but one only has to take a quick google search to find a wealth of information made by veganism on low incomes, working-class vegans, disabled vegan, immigrant vegans, vegans from all walks of life. Using poor people in this way is not only incredibly patronizing and insulting but it also ignores the fact that animal agriculture is 100% a class issue, with working-class and immigrant communities being most negatively effet by the animal ag industry.

~ Also worth noting that most vegans in the US, for example, are actually on the lowest end of the economic scale compared to non-vegans. And that there is a very strong positive relationship between the level of income and the consumption of flesh, milk, and eggs, with the consumption of animal flesh, milk and eggs increasing as income grows at the expense of plant-based staple foods. This as well as the fact that most of the world’s poorest people subsist on a primarily plant-based diet. Not surprising since pound for pound a plant-based diet is the cheapest worldwide.

~ Veganism isn’t a diet, its a social justice movement and ethical stance that seeks to avoid as far as is possible and practicable all forms of animal exploitation.
